my favorite quote this weekend comes from Hyrum...."conference is kind of a like a long movie that we have to watch Mommy"
General Conference out East is broadcast from 12-2 and then 4-6 so Saturday we enjoyed a picnic lunch while we watched the first session. We had promised Hyrum he could have Cheetoh's with his lunch since it was a special weekend. Boy, was he excited. I was excited we bought a cord to hook our computer up to our TV so we could actually watch conference on a bigger screen and we could turn the volume up high enough so we could hear. Best 18 dollar purchase ever perhaps!
We played a couple of games, thanks to the ideas in the Ensign, with Hyrum to help him pay attention. We hung up pictures of the First Presidency and 12 Apostles and every time one of them spoke and he could identify them he could place a sticker on their picture. He learned the names of the First Presidency in family home evening earlier in the week.
Then for Hyrum's favorite game. Every time he heard them say 'Jesus' or 'Christ' he was able to eat an M&M. I was rather impressed with how many he heard. He missed a lot too but it's a start. Saturday he watched the entire first session on the couch with us and watched about 3/4ths of the second session that day. Sunday we watched the morning session at a friend's house so he played mostly and he slept through most of the second one but I was really proud of him for paying attention so well. Hunter wasn't too loud and he enjoyed Hyrum getting him an M&M on occasion.
This was the year for starting traditions I guess. We decided on Saturday that in between the second general session and the Priesthood session we would make a tradition to go out to dinner and that the kids could decide what kind of food we would get. Hyrum decided readily on 'hangabers'. I have to say it was really special to see Hyrum get excited about conference, even though I know it had mostly to do with the food! That is the quickest way to Hyrum's heart.I love my parents---THANK YOU!!!

That is such a wonderful idea to have games to help the kids interact with Conference. I will have to get some tips on that from you.;) I love Conference too. It is such a wonderful uplifting experience. That is cool that you hooked it up from the internet to your tv. :)
What fun! That's impressive, all the games you had. I will have to try them with Brynne next time. I made her stay in the room and by the end on Sunday she was saying "This is sooooo boring." And so it begins I guess....My parents always took us out to eat after the Sat morning session too. It is a tradition we continue with to this day. What a treat.
How sweet, Meg. Good for you to find a way to get the kids involved, they will grow up to love Conference too!
We love conference too! We always watch all the sessions too. This year we drove to Boise on saturday and recorded it, I felt like I was breaking the sabbath! Keagan was soo excited to watch it at the Reddings on Sunday on the "big" screen. :) Its nice when they get older, too, my kids now don't even question that we are going to watch all 4 sessions. I love the picture of your parents!
You are amazing Megan! I love reading all of your ideas and they way you engaged your boys in conference!!! I will need to remember these tips next Conference!
You and Jeremy are just such do-ers of the word, and not hearers only!!! You both are great examples to me! LOVE YOU!
SO, what is that cord called? WE NEED ONE! That would be great. That was one hard thing is that the volume on our computer is so low. And I love that you hung BIG pictures of the First Presidency and the Apostles all around the TV. How awesome!
What great ideas!! I'm totally gonna use those! That picture of your parents is adorable! They are so cute and in love! That's awesome!
Oh, how I loved this post! Conference is the best and how I want my kids to love it with all their hearts!! YOu had great ideas to keep the kids involved. We did something sort of similar...we put up different words like President Monson, Prayer, Jesus, Holy Ghost, and everytime they'd hear those words said, they would put a sticker on them. It was fun...but to keep them occupied with it for the two hours was a wee bit difficult. I like your other ideas. We may have to incorporate them next time. thanks!!!!
