Adventing It

So, I love Christmas. And I'm always on the hunt for more traditions to start with my little family. I thought it would be fun to do an Advent calendar but along with counting down the days we could plan something fun to do every evening that was Christmasy & of course relatively simple. I got a lot of great ideas from friends & figured out which ones we wanted to do but I still had to make some sort of calendar. In steps my Mums to save the day! She sent me the Advent calendar her Mom had made for us as little kids. Each day there is a little ornament you put on the felt tree. This was probably one of my top 3 favorite traditions to do as a kid (& teenager & adult)!!! I am so grateful that now my kids can have this tradition & with the same calendar that I grew up with. And all I had to do was slip in a piece of paper announcing what our activity for the evening would be. Perfect!

So I'm going to try & blog every day or two to document the things we did this year since this is our family journal.

Day 1

Our church hosts a Creche exhibit every year where they have dozens if not hundreds of Nativity scenes on display as well as a live Nativity outside (brrrr....) There are cookies, hot chocolate & wassail inside. And they bring performers up from Branson to sing plus local groups perform as well every night. So we went last night. Some friends of ours unexpectedly went into labor so we ended up with 7 kids under the age of 6 but I was determined to go & we lasted much longer than I thought we would!

Six was the performer that evening. They are a group of LDS brothers who sing & are one of the biggest/most popular acts down in Branson. Maybe our boys could be called Four. Just kidding.

Day 2

Tonight we decorated our house! We really don't have many decorations but what we have I like. We tried to decorate with the babies but well, let's just say there are very good reasons the tree remains in the dining room again this year & everything else is up high. So we ended up putting them to bed.

I love our stockings! I need to make one more by next Christmas but I'm running out of ideas for different patterns. There's only so many ways to do stripes :)

How fun! I've been wanting to do an advent this year with activities to do each day, but haven't had the time to put one together. Maybe when I'm at my mom's at Christmas I'll have to see if she still has our old advent... Great idea!

Glad you had a fun Thanksgiving! How fun to visit family. What did you think of San Antonio? Matt had an interview there for residency, so it's a possibility :-).

I love the mantle and tree! You have some fun nativities too. Your stockings are great! That is awesome you all still went to the creche display. Sounds like a fun evening. I am excited to hear about all of your traditions!

I LOVE your block Nativity, so fun for the kids to be able to carry them around and rearrange them. Love the stockings, too. Very proud of you Meg. Do you remember the leprosy wrap I tried to crochet? That's what MY stockings would look like!!

I love all your decorations. And I LOVE your nativities. YOu have inspired me with that email to do a advent, but I don't think it will happen this year, but I'm saving up all your ideas for next year.

I love it! Someday we'll have time in the evenings to do cool stuff like this, right? (H has to be in bed by 6 at the LATEST in order for us to survive school/home life right now. However, there are benefits to that early bedtime, so I guess I shouldn't complain, eh?)

I grew up with a fabric tree advent calendar and miss it terribly too! How awesome of your mom to send you hers! I'm jealous! ;)
